Respect For Brassing
From brassing comes a multitude of rewards but like what one couple engaged in this activity will tell you there are a lot of obstacles involved in this hobby. If you ask them nicely they may actually tell you what it is all about. Brassing is the process whereby the images of the flat metal figures placed on tombs and in churches in stones, and other decorative 13th to 17th Century England are transferred onto paper for displaying as works of art. Appearing to be simple but in reality is not is this process, says the couple. It was about a year ago when the couple was moved to an Air Force base from England where they stayed for four years. Other than being able to obtain antique furniture and other things, the display resulting from this couples interest in collecting antiques also include antique dishes and utensils. Unheard of in the United States is the process of brassing but the couple became interested in it when they were in England for it was a popular activity there.
Either engraved flat brass portraits were placed on tombs or the floors of the nearby churches during the 13th Century as a way for the upper class English to honor their dead. To recreate and image the brasses would be lined with special black paper and then it will be rubbed using a special gold colored wax bar.
Following the ridges in the brass the wax rubs off on the paper recreating a certain image. From the original monument, about 200 paper images and a duplicate brass were brought back by the couple. Most valuable is the brass of Sir John d' Abernon for the couple and he died in 1277 in a battle. For the couple, they noticed how only the people who had experience were allowed by the Vicars in charge of the brasses to duplicate brasses. From the English comes much reluctance when it comes to permitting people to make the brass duplicates and this was caused by a number of Americans who went there and brought back duplicates selling them in New York for $2,000 each so a waiver is now needed stating the absence of any intent to sell before any duplication is allowed.
Considering the large number initially put down from 1250 to 1650, about 8,000 monuments remain. Tracing the development of armor, clothing, and lifestyle all became possible after the historians were able to find clues from the monuments by means of these brasses. Beside a lion pictured at the feet of a knight means that he died in battle, another thing they found out was that a hound at someone's feet meant that he liked to hunt with dogs.
Only a few brasses are in the US especially because here art is still catching up. In making replicates of manhole covers, etchings on tombstones, and other decorative engravings, rubbing can be used. Regardless if it took the couple four hours to finish the rubbing of Sir d' Abernon this is still a fun hobby. Asked from the couple by several schools and art shows is that they display their rubbings.
